Presentation of the book “Pietro Leopoldo – The Grand Duke of Reforms” by Eugenio Giani
On Monday, July 7th, 2025, Montecatini Terme will have the honour of hosting a prestigious cultural event: the presentation of the new book by the President of the Tuscany Region, Eugenio Giani, entitled “Pietro Leopoldo – The Grand Duke of Reforms” (Giunti Editions, 2025).
The event will take place at 6:30 PM in the Council Chamber of the Palazzo Comunale (Viale Verdi 46, second floor).
The author, who holds a degree in Law and has been Governor of the Region since 2020, is also known as a passionate scholar and expert on Tuscan history. In this volume, Giani tells the story of Pietro Leopoldo of Habsburg-Lorraine, an enlightened Grand Duke who led Tuscany through a period of great modernisation and progress. With an engaging style and compelling narrative, the book retraces the sovereign’s life, from his early years at the Viennese court to his return as Emperor of Austria, highlighting the important reforms he introduced in the Grand Duchy, such as the abolition of torture and the death penalty through the famous Leopoldine Penal Code of 1786.
The presentation will also be an opportunity to celebrate the deep bond between Pietro Leopoldo and Montecatini Terme. In fact, it was thanks to him that the modern spa town was born, the result of an ambitious reclamation and urban development project that transformed the plain at the foot of the ancient castle into one of Europe’s most renowned spa destinations. The Municipality of Montecatini Terme, through a grant promoted by the Tuscany Region to mark the 260th anniversary of Pietro Leopoldo’s accession to the throne, has launched a cultural enhancement project including guided tours, a film, a historical publication and a series of events, of which this book presentation is the official opening.
