La storica funicolare, coi suoi due vagoni rossi – Gigio e Gigia – fu inaugurata nel 1898 alla presenza di Giuseppe Verdi. Funge da collegamento tra la parte bassa della città e il borgo in collina di Montecatini Alto, offrendo una visuale della città immersa nell’armonia del verde.
I due vagoni si incontrano a metà del percorso “salutandosi” e sono un’alternativa per salire al borgo che consente di godersi al meglio il panorama circostante. Parallelamente è seguita dal tratto pedonale detto della “Corta”, immerso tra il verde del bosco e degli alberi di ulivo, permettendo anche di raggiungere a piedi la città.
Il metodo di funzionamento della funicolare inizialmente avveniva grazie a una grossa caldaia a vapore situata a valle, dal 1921 fu poi sostituito da una trazione con motore elettrico. Il servizio della funicolare ha avuto nel tempo alcune interruzioni, nel 1944 per cause belliche divenne inagibile fino al 1949, e in seguito nel 1977 furono necessari dei lavori di adeguamento tecnico che causarono la sua chiusura fino al 1982.
