La presenza di questo imponente monumento nella piazza antistante la stazione, evidenzia il forte legame che unisce la città all’acqua, esaltato ulteriormente dai dettagli della fontana: un’alta torre rivestita da mosaici azzurri e circondata da tre vasche digradanti in cui scorre l’acqua formando piccole cascate.
La stazione venne costruita tra il 1933 e il 1937, per sostenere la forte espansione che la città ebbe in quel periodo, ragion per cui la sola stazione in Piazza Gramsci non era più sufficiente.
Nel 2016 fu avviato un progetto di restauro delle sale di attesa della struttura che sono state aperte al pubblico per la prima volta durante le giornate Fai di Primavera del 2021. I lavori, curati dalla Soprintendenza, hanno seguito il più possibile i materiali e gli arredi originali per essere il più possibile fedeli al lavoro del Mazzoni.
