La stazione venne costruita tra il 1933 e il 1937, per sostenere la forte espansione che la città ebbe in quel periodo, ragion per cui la sola stazione in Piazza Gramsci non era più sufficiente.
Nel 2016 fu avviato un progetto di restauro delle sale di attesa della struttura che sono state aperte al pubblico per la prima volta durante le giornate Fai di Primavera del 2021. I lavori, curati dalla Soprintendenza, hanno seguito il più possibile i materiali e gli arredi originali per essere il più possibile fedeli al lavoro del Mazzoni.
