L’opera di bonifica venne promossa dal Granduca Pietro Leopoldo di Lorena, il quale viene infatti considerato l’illuminato fondatore del complesso termale. Prima di questo momento, la Valdinievole, tra il 1550 e il 1756, venne colpita numerose volte da epidemie e carestie proprio a causa delle acque termali che emergevano in superficie e ristagnavano nei crateri.
