Giuseppe Verdi arrivò a Montecatini la prima volta nel 1882 e l’ultima sua vacanza termale fu nel 1900 pochi mesi prima della sua morte. Durante i suoi soggiorni montecatinesi si recava quotidianamente al Tettuccio a bere le acque e si concedeva lunghe passeggiate a Montecatini Alto, una delle sue tappe preferite.
A Montecatini Terme Verdi ritrovò l’ambiente idoneo alla sua creatività e nel 1885 vi compose gran parte del terzo atto dell’Otello, mentre durante le vacanze del 1889 vi iniziò il suo Falstaff.
Su suo espresso desiderio il medico Pietro Grocco, direttore sanitario delle Terme di Montecatini e suo medico personale, lo raggiunse a Milano per assisterlo negli ultimi giorni di vita e fino alla morte, avvenuta il 27 gennaio 1901.
Il 28 gennaio del 1901 il Consiglio Comunale di Montecatini Terme, riunito in seduta straordinaria, decide che: “al Viale ora denominato del Tettuccio, per il tratto che va dalle Terme al Tettuccio, viene imposto il nome di Viale Giuseppe Verdi; al tratto di mura castellane, che va dallo scalo della Funicolare allo Chalet Melani, è imposto il nome di Passeggiata Giuseppe Verdi.”
