Grazie alle opere di bonifica di Pietro Leopoldo di Lorena le acque stagnanti vennero eliminate dalla valle, e le sorgenti termali montecatinesi assunsero una forte importanza; portando all’avvio della stazione termale in città.
Tra le fonti principali attualmente ancora utilizzate si ricorda: la Fonte Tettuccio, la Fonte Regina, la Fonte Leopoldina e la Fonte Rinfresco.
Queste acque salso-solfate-alcaline, dal gusto leggermente salato, favoriscono in particolar modo le funzioni del fegato, intestinali e biliari. La Leopoldina si presta anche alla fangoterapia, alla balneoterapia e alla terapia inalatoria.
